Dairy-Free Egg-Free Gluten-Free Cottage Pie

A hearty family cottage pie made with savoury beef mince, vegetables, and a rich gravy, topped with smooth dairy-free mashed potato. Comforting, filling, and perfect for an easy family dinner.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 500 g beef mince
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée
  • 1 tbsp gluten-free plain flour
  • 300 ml gluten-free beef stock
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce use a gluten-free version if needed
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the topping
  • 800 g potatoes peeled and chopped
  • 50 ml dairy-free milk
  • 25 g dairy-free butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  2. Heat the olive oil in a large pan and gently soften the onion, carrots, and garlic.
  3. Add the beef mince and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  4. Stir in the tomato purée and gluten-free flour.
  5. Pour in the gluten-free beef stock and add the thyme and Worcestershire sauce.
  6. Stir well and simmer for 20 minutes, until the filling has thickened.
  7. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in a pan of salted water until tender, then drain well.
  8. Mash the potatoes with the dairy-free milk and dairy-free butter until smooth. Season to taste.
  9. Spoon the beef filling into an ovenproof dish and spread the mashed potato over the top.
  10. Bake at 180°C for 20 minutes, until the top is lightly golden and the filling is bubbling.

  • You can rough up the mash with a fork before baking for a crisper top.
